First Grade Polar Bears
After reading When Wishes Come True by Per Henrik Gurth and looking at the shapes and details of polar bears, students first drew a polar bear shape onto some heavier paper/cardstock. Students then carefully cut out the bear shape so that they could keep both pieces. We taped where they cut and used this piece as a stencil and the other bear shape was used for masking out. Students used watercolor paper and watercolors with saran wrap to created the stenciled polar bear in the artic. This approach gave the bears a ghost-like quality to them. The other piece we used tempera paint mixed with and irridescent medium and flicked paint to create snow. Examples are below.
